PS 69X MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to create a community of lifelong learners in pursuit of academic excellence, where all students learn the necessary skills to become caring, creative and productive citizens.

We will provide students, teachers and parents with a respectful nurturing community where we will educate their minds and their hearts for the 21st century.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

P.S. 69 is situated in the Clason Point section of the Bronx. It is mostly surrounded by one family homes, interspersed with low rise apartment buildings. Our school is comprised of two buildings. The main building was built in 1923. The mini-school is an Early Childhood Learning Center for grades K and 1.
The entire school complex serves approximately 500 neighborhood students. There are 39 teachers and 25 ancillary and support personnel. This includes one principal, one assistant principal, one parent coordinator, two secretaries and two school safety officers. The school is heterogeneously organized. PS 69 follows a balanced literacy approach to reading. Grades K - 2 use the Everyday Math Curriculum as well as Math Steps. Grade 3-4 use Scott Foreman. We are a standards driven school based on students' needs.
The teachers, students and parents work collaboratively in a positive, warm climate that is reflected in the children's independence and mastery. There is a rich culture of parent and community involvement working in partnership with the staff and the students.
We plan to have an extended day program for our 3rd and 4th grade students.
Con Edison has provided our students with Pen Pal and Read Aloud programs. Education Through Music is in our school providing our students with music and art programs. Chess in the Schools provides an intensive chess program for our third and fourth graders. Additionally, we will have an extended chess program for the entire school. We have established a partnership with Columbia University in which interns from the School of Social Work provide services to our students.
Our mission is to create a community of life long learners in pursuit of academic excellence. Together with parents, we will educate the minds and hearts of our children.

Resolving Conflict Creatively Program at P.S. 69

This program provides for the training of students and teachers in conflict resolution and intercultural understanding. The program’s objectives include: raising awareness that there are many ways to respond to conflict, teaching skills that make nonviolent responses to conflict possible, promoting bias awareness and appreciation for all cultures and individuals and promoting an understanding that each of us has a role to play in making the world a more peaceful place. The program includes classroom instruction, teacher training, parent workshops and a student mediation program.
Themes of the curriculum include active listening, dealing with feelings, assertiveness, negotiation, mediation, celebrating differences and standing up to prejudice. Classroom workshops introduce children to conflict resolution concepts, ask them to share personal experiences, teach specific skills in communication and problem solving and provide opportunities for practicing skills through skits and role playing.
A recently completed study of RCCP (Resolving Conflict Creatively Program) provides evidence to support the potential of this school based program for preventing violence. In addition, children who are taught Conflict Resolution lessons improved on standardized test scores in reading and math.
